Q:  How do I know which list is the “right” type of list for me?
A:  That’s where a list broker is invaluable.  A ListMart list broker will consult with you to recommend the best type of list for your offer and can provide guidance in all other areas of your marketing plan.

Q:  How much does it cost to work with a list broker?
A:  It costs you nothing to work with a list broker – their fee is paid by the list owner, as a small percentage of the list cost.  There is no additional cost to you – even more good reason to let our ListMart representatives deal with the details!

Q:  What does “/m” and “/f” mean?
A:  Lists are priced on a “per thousand” basis, and pricing is expressed as “$125/m” ($125 for each 1000 records).  “Flat fees” are charged for some services such as shipping, and are expressed in this way “$50/f” ($50 flat for shipping).

Q:  How do I order a list?
A:  Once you have worked with your list broker to determine the best lists and quantities for your mailing, the following pieces are needed:

1. A copy of the mail piece you plan to send out.  This will be submitted to the list owner for approval.

2. We will need to know your planned mail date and when you will need the names.

3. We need to know where to ship the names.

Q:  How many times can I mail the list?
A:  List rentals are for a one-time use only.  Lists are “seeded” to detect unauthorized usage and penalties can be quite severe if the lists are mailed more than once.  You are only approved to mail the sample mail piece that was submitted to the list owner – you cannot change your mind and mail something else without approval once the order has been placed.

Q:  How long does it take to place a list order?
A:  The length of time it takes to process a list order varies, depending on the type of list ordered.  Some lists can be produced in as little as a few hours, and some direct response lists can take up to a week to process.  To be safe, allow at least one full week (preferably 10 days for complicated orders) to process a list order.  Many list owners require prepayment on first-time orders - until a credit history is established - and this can take time.

Q:  What are the best segments to take for my mailing?
A:  You can work with your list broker to determine the best way to make selections on a list to reach your target.  Each list is unique and has different selections available.  Typical selects for business lists are sales volume, employee size, SIC code, etc.  Consumer lists may have lifestyle data, income, presence of children, etc.  Virtually all lists have geographic selections such as zip code or SCF (the first 3 digits of the zip code).

Q:  How many names do I have to order?
A:  Most lists have a “minimum order” requirement, and many lists on the market set their minimum at 5000 records.  Some lists have a minimum dollar amount, such as $250 minimum orders.  You can rent fewer names than the minimum order stated, but you will be charged the minimum in most cases.

Q:  What response rate will I get for my mailing?
A:  There is no way to know in advance what response you will get for your mailing.  Final response to your mailing is usually 40% dependent on lists, 40% dependent on your offer and 20% dependent on the creative.  All of these pieces together add up to your total response.  You can discuss variables such as best times to mail, etc. to help to boost your response rate – but there is no guarantee.  You must pay for your lists even if you are disappointed by response.

Q:  What about duplicate names?
A:  You can conduct a merge/purge if you are ordering large quantities from numerous lists and think that the duplication rate may warrant it.  Generally, it is worth the price of the merge/purge if you are ordering more than 50,000 records.  In some cases, ordering from a database is an option that can help to lower the number of duplicates, as well.  Discuss all your options with your list broker.

Q:  How much do mailing lists cost?
A:  The list price is set by the list owner and can be priced from $20/m on up to $150/m or more for postal lists, and higher for email lists.  Compiled files are generally less expensive and direct response files (such as catalog buyers, subscriber files, etc.) are usually the most expensive.

Q:  I want to prepare my own mailing.  Can you ship the list directly to me?
A:  In some cases you can have the list shipped directly to you.  Many list owners, particularly direct response list owners, will only allow us to ship their list to a “third party lettershop”.  This is for security reasons.

Q:  What is a lettershop and how do I find one?
A:  Lettershops or mailhouses prepare your mailing for you and lodge it with the post office.  You can find lettershops listed in the Yellow Pages – usually under Mailing Services.
